Cult Ties, Parents Dead — What Broke This Case?

A woman linked to a violent cult-like group has been charged with killing her own parents on her 30th birthday — and prosecutors say she didn’t act alone.

A Cold Case Finally Breaks Open

On January 2, 2023, Pennsylvania state police found Richard and Rita Zajko dead inside their Chester Heights home. They had been shot on New Year’s Eve, surrounded by their daughter’s childhood toys in her old playroom. The case went cold for years. Then, in June 2026, Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse announced murder, burglary, and conspiracy charges against their daughter, Michelle Zajko, now 33.

Rouse told reporters the case was built piece by piece. “This investigation was thorough and took years to piece together,” he said. Investigators used doorbell camera footage, ballistic analysis, and cellphone records to build their case. Rouse was direct: “We are very certain that Michelle Zajko was in the home and arranged for the death of her parents.” He also said she did not act alone, though no accomplices have been named.

The Evidence Prosecutors Are Relying On

A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured two people arriving at the Zajko home on the night of the murders. Enhanced audio from that footage picked up someone yelling “Mom!” at the front door. Prosecutors pointed out that Michelle was Richard and Rita’s only child. Ballistic analysis found that shell casings left at the scene matched a firearm previously used at Zajko’s Vermont home and at a firing range in her backyard.

Prosecutors also say Zajko wrote a list that described mistakes made during the crime — including leaving shell casings behind. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives identified Zajko as the person who supplied guns used by Zizians members in a separate January 2025 shootout in Vermont that killed a U.S. Border Patrol agent. No murder weapon has been recovered in the Pennsylvania case.

Who Are the Zizians?

The Zizians are described as a small, informal group of young, highly intelligent computer scientists with radical beliefs about veganism, animal rights, gender identity, and artificial intelligence. Authorities link the group to six violent deaths since 2022. Those include the Zajko murders in Pennsylvania, the killing of a landlord in California, and the death of a Border Patrol agent in Vermont. The group’s leader, Jack “Ziz” LaSota, was arrested with Zajko in Frostburg, Maryland in February 2025.

Zajko, LaSota, and a third person named Daniel Blank all face state charges of trespassing and illegal gun and drug possession. LaSota also faces a federal charge of illegal gun possession by a fugitive. All three have pleaded not guilty. Zajko has been held in Maryland since her February 2025 arrest. In an April 2025 “Open Letter to the World” distributed by her attorney to the Associated Press, she wrote simply: “I didn’t murder my parents.” She has suggested in court filings that her father may have shot her mother before turning the gun on himself — a theory prosecutors have not accepted.

What This Case Tells Us About Radicalization

This case raises hard questions that go beyond one family’s tragedy. Cults and extremist groups often recruit smart, educated people by offering a tight community and a sense of purpose. Once inside, members can be pushed toward actions that would be unthinkable on their own. The Zizians appear to fit that pattern — a small, ideologically driven group whose beliefs may have led to multiple deaths. Whether Zajko was a willing participant or a product of that influence will be for a jury to decide.
